Touching, Not Touching (Diptych)
Dr. Roni Yaniv | Mixed media on canvas — acrylic, histological collage from a historical dermatological atlas, metallic pigments | 50×70 cm + 40×40 cm | 2026In the clinic, the encounter with damaged skin reveals a layer far deeper than the medical question of contagion: the instinctive, sensory recoil from the diseased body. Psoriasis is not contagious — yet its roughness and scaling breed absolute isolation. "Touching, Not Touching," whose title carries the etched echo of a well-known Israeli song, describes that moment when a hand reaches out for a caress and freezes mid-air.The black fissure splitting the main canvas is not an empty space, but a chasm of alienation: an encounter between warm, sensual female skin and flesh embedded with medical diagrams and chalky-silver scaling. The bodies are close enough to nearly touch — yet the mental distance between them is vast.The main canvas displays the tragic split between the desire for contact and shame. The companion canvas — an abstract macro close-up, free of scientific mediation — forces the viewer to draw near the seemingly repulsive material, transforming recoil into empathy and beauty. The artwork shatters medical sterility, confronting the viewer with our most primal impulses: attraction, aversion, and the right to touch.
